Pow wows. A Celebration of Native American Culture

Pow wows have become a popular way for people to experience traditional Native American culture. These gatherings are an opportunity for American Indians to celebrate their rich ancestral histories, reconnect with old friends, and showcase their traditional music, dance, and clothing. While there is no single definition of a pow wow, it is widely understood to be a social and cultural event that involves music, dance, and fellowship.
There are various stories about the origins of pow wows. Some believe that it began with the War dance Societies of the Ponca and other Southern Plains Tribes. Others think that the U.S. government forced Native Americans to have dances for the public to come and see when they were forced onto reservations. Before each dance, they were led through the town in a ceremony or parade, which is the beginning of the Grand Entry.
At the heart of the pow wow are the Native American Indian singers who play a crucial role in the gathering. They provide the music that accompanies the dancers and without them, there would be no dancing. The songs they sing vary from religious to war to social, and many are still sung in traditional Native American languages. These songs serve as reminders to Native Americans of their old ways and rich heritage.
One of the most important things in the life of a Native American is the Drum. The whole culture centers around the Drum. Without the Drum and the singers around it, the Native Americans could not have pow wows. The Drum brings the heart beat of our Earth Mother to the pow wow for all to feel and hear. Drumming brings everyone back into balance. Whether dancing, singing or just listening, people around the Drum can connect with spirit. It is no wonder the Drum should be treated with great respect.
The head singer at a pow wow is a great honor. The man who receives this honor is chosen for his experience. He has the right to lead all songs unless he chooses other men to lead and help carry the load. The head singer may open the Drum at his discretion, which means anyone may lead songs at any time. Once a singer takes his place at the Drum, he should stay until there is a break. If he has to leave, he should inform the head singer.

The pow wow is organized by a council that works for months before the event. At the pow wow, the emcee runs the ceremony events. The emcee works with the Arena Director to keep the conference or meeting running smoothly. These two individuals, along with the council, work hard to bring the people together for dance and fellowship in the circle.
The pow wow begins with the Grand Entry, which is when everybody enters the arena. During the Grand Entry, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the arena. The flags carried generally include the U.S. Flag, Tribal Flags, the POW Flag, and Eagle Staffs of various tribes present. These are usually carried by veterans. American Indians hold the United States Flag in an honored position despite the horrible treatment received from this country. The flag has a dual meaning. First, it is a way to remember all of the Native Americans' ancestors that fought against this country. It is also the symbol of the United States which includes millions of Indians. The flag here also reminds people of those people who have fought for this country.
In conclusion, pow wows are a celebration of Native American culture and a way for American Indians to reconnect with their heritage.
